I have great respect for prostitutes.
Ask anyone though, and chances are, adjectives such as “cheap”, “slut”, “whore” and ”degrading” will spill out. And I’m only listing a few.
Think again. What’s so wrong about being a prostitute?
Prostitutes have sex for money.
So what about the majority of us who slogged through our lives for money? Are we any different? Prostitute is a job. So is a banker. So is an engineer. Eventually, we all trade ourselves for money, isn’t it? And are you telling me that our eyes, arms, legs, brain cells and any other body parts are not as valuable as the vagina, penis and/or breasts?
Prostitutes endanger their own lives.
Yes, AIDS is a health hazard. But what about poor eyesight, backaches, arthritis, etc – the illnesses that all of us are exposed to in our daily desk-bound, 10-hours-by-the-computer and assumingly decent jobs? Whatever job we take, we just have to bear the health risks associated. Isn’t it?
But AIDS can spread. They are creating health risks.
Yes, yes. But do they want to get AIDS? Hell no. Prostitutes can try to protect themselves and their clients through condoms, but when their clients insist not to be friends with the rubber, what are the chances that they can reject? Think about it again. When your boss requires you to finish up a report even when it’s time to leave for home, do you?
Prostitutes have low moral values.
Ask me and I would say they are making money out of their own capabilities. They are not robbing or stealing. That’s HIGH moral values. What’s wrong with that? And who dictates that a person cannot use sex to trade? Who define these social norms and why should people follow blindly to these rules? Just because our ancestors did and so we should? Just because our parents taught us that way? Just because the media portray them in a negative way? I’m not suggesting that the society norms should be changed. But rather, the best we can do is to leave these people alone. Don’t speak negatively of them. Don’t criticize. Don’t judge. It doesn’t mean that if they don’t fit into the norms, they do not deserve a space of their own. They still deserve our respect.
There are so many jobs available. Why prostitution?
There are 2 kinds of prostitutes that we are talking about.
1: they are in the job because they want to. It could be because of quick money. It could be because of the lifestyle. We don’t really know. But the fact is, they WANT to. And if they are happy that way, why should we view them with prejudice? If you want to be a lawyer, how would you feel if people look at you with disgust and force you to be an engineer instead?
2: they are in the job because they do not have a choice. For example, we have all heard of child prostitution. We have also seen cases where people are coerced into prostitution for sake of debt repayment. It’s saddening. And for cases like this, they are definitely unwilling to be prostitutes. But they grit their teeth in the hope to live for another day, as well as to leave the industry quick. Doesn’t this sound similar to how we are often willing to stay in our sucky jobs just so that we can accumulate enough experience to move to a better one?
Oh, prostitutes are whores. They seduce our husbands/wives.
It takes 3 hands to clap. The prostitutes being sexually appealing, your husband/wife’s weakness at that moment, and your fault in not maintaining your own attractiveness. Now, blame who again?
Respect every job. That includes prostitution.
